Junior Damian Bandereck (Topsfield, Mass.) scored with 1:55 left in overtime to give the men's lacrosse squad a thrilling 8-7 victory against Emerson at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.
Johnson & Wales sophomore Chris Macchi (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) recorded four goals and added an assist on the game-winning goal. Sophomore Nicholas Kitsos (Summit, N.J.) tallied a hat-trick and added a pair of assists in the setback for Emerson.
JWU had control of the game early as back-to-back goals by Macchi late in the first quarter gave the Wildcats the 3-1 lead. Emerson responded, however and scored all three goals of the second half, including a pair by Kitson, to take the 4-3 lead heading into halftime.
After a scoreless third period, Emerson continued to build on their lead and went up 6-3 after tallying the first two of the fourth quarter. This time the Wildcats rallied and knotted the game at 7-7 on Macchi's fourth goal of the game with just :57 left in regulation. The two teams then headed into overtime where Bandereck provided the heroics to propel JWU to the 8-7 win.
Johnson & Wales junior Jack Pettine (Foxboro, Mass.) tallied 19 saves in the victory for the Wildcats while senior Zoe Fisk made 20 saves in the setback for Emerson.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 2-4 while Emerson falls to 1-4 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, March 22nd when they host Becker in a non-conference contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
