CLERMONT, Fla. – Despite a strong pitching performance from senior Jennifer Corona, the Johnson & Wales University softball team couldn't come through with a victory in the season opener. The Wildcats lost a 1-0 decision to Neumann on Tuesday.
The Knights got a pair of walks off Corona in the top of the first inning to put a runner in scoring position. Kate Korte singled through the right side to score Grace Sperrassa with the lone run of the game.
Third baseman Meghan Gavin got into scoring position three times, but the Wildcats could not get her across the plate. She drew a walk in the bottom of the first then had singles in the fourth and sixth innings.
Corona only gave up the one earned run in seven innings of work. She struck out seven and issued three walks.
Johnson & Wales is back on the field Wednesday to take on Saint Mary's (MN) at 9 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest against Alma.
