Johnson & Wales Women's Basketball Posts 68-58 Win Over Lasell

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team posted a 68-58 victory over Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Wednesday evening. The game was the annual Pink Out Night with proceeds benefiting the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Research Fund. JWU raised over $150 for the organization.

Johnson & Wales was led by senior Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists while fellow senior Jeniphr Moxley (Lakewood, Wash.) added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. Freshman Allyson Dowen (Burlington, Vt.) tallied nine points and eight boards for the Wildcats.

Lasell junior Katie Farr (Rindge, N.H.) recorded 17 points and four rebounds while senior Tricia Culver (Northampton, Mass.) added 14 points and four boards for the Lasers. Freshman Kim Archibald (Lewiston, Maine) had four points and a game-high 17 rebounds in the setback.

Johnson & Wales took the early 15-5 lead, capped by a three pointer by Ramirez with 15:22 left in the first half. Lasell then used a 12-1 run over the next seven minutes and took their first lead of the game, 17-16 on a jumper by Farr with 7:43 on the clock. The Wildcats went on an 8-2 run of their own and regained the 24-19 advantage on a jumper by Moxley with 4:10 left in the first half. JWU took the 27-26 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Wildcats controlled the action in the opening stages of the second half and took their largest lead of the game on a three pointer by freshman Marina Millian (Chester, N.Y.) with 10:03 left in the contest. The visiting Lasers chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to just eight points when a pair of free throws by Farr made the score 66-58 with just under a minute left. That would be as close as they would get, however as JWU took the 68-58 victory.

With the win JWU improves to 11-12 overall and 7-4 in the GNAC while Lasell falls to 7-17 overall, 3-8 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 20th when they travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC contest, starting at 1:00 p.m.
