Freshman Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.) tallied six goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Husson in a non-conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Monday afternoon.
Husson was led by junior Abi Staab (Berlin, Vt.) who scored four goals in the setback for the Eagles.
Husson took the early 4-2 lead as Staab scored three of the first four goals, including one with 2:36 left in the first half. JWU responded, however and cut the lead to 4-3 on a free position shot by junior Toni-Ann Mule (Lake Grove, N.Y.) with 1:44 on the clock. Knapp's third goal of the game with :23 remaining in the stanza would send the game into the half tied 4-4.
Johnson & Wales pushed the lead to 7-4 on a successful free position shot by junior Natalie DiCocco (Media, Pa.) with 16:48 remaining in the contest. Husson then tallied the next three goals of the game to tie the score 7-7 on Staab's fourth goal of the day. Back-to-back unassisted goals by Knapp put the Wildcats up 9-7. Husson threatened late in the game and trimmed the lead to 9-8 on a goal by senior Caitlyn Stauffer (Brookfield, Conn.). It wouldn't be enough though as JWU held on for the 9-8 victory.
Junior Genevieve Giampietro (Meriden, Conn.) made six saves in the victory for Johnson & Wales while freshman Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I.) tallied nine stops in the setback for Husson.
With the victory Johnson & Wales is now 3-1 while Husson falls to 0-3 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, March 13th when they host Colby-Sawyer in a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m.
