The women's Lacrosse team fell to Simmons, 17-10 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales opened the scoring just :23 seconds into the first half when freshman Kayla Smith (Eastham, Mass.) fed sophomore Jessica Schmell (Coopersburg, Pa.) to give JWU the early 1-0 lead. The Sharks answered with seven straight goals, including three by Greer Gilbert, to take the 7-1 advantage. The Sharks took the 8-2 lead heading into halftime.
JWU chipped away at the lead throughout the second half and cut the deficit to four on a free position goal from sophomore Anna Oshiro (Gloucester, Mass.) with just over twelve minutes remaining in the contest. It wouldn't be enough though as Simmons pulled away late for the 17-10 victory.
Freshman Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.) netted three goals and added a pair of assists while Smith also had three goals and two assists in the loss for Johnson & Wales. Gilbert tallied six goals and added two assists in the win for Simmons.
Junior Genevieve Giampietro (Meriden, Conn.) had 10 saves for Johnson & Wales in the setback while Crystal DeRosier stopped eight shots in the victory for the Sharks.
With the loss JWU falls to 7-7 on the year and 4-4 in the GNAC while Simmons improves to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in league play. JWU returns to action on Wednesday, April 16th when they host St. Joseph's of Connecticut in a GNAC contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex at 4:00 p.m.
