Kayla Sypek Notches Hat Trick In 4-0 Win Over Mount Ida
Freshman Kayla Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) scored a hat trick to lead the women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory against Mount Ida in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Wednesday afternoon.
After battling early in the contest, JWU got on the board first as Sypek put in a cross into the box from senior Katlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, Conn.) at the 21:21 mark. The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 on Sypek's second goal of the game, this time on a breakaway just before halftime as the squad took the two goal advantage into the break.
The Wildcats went ahead 3-0 when Gerrish found the back of the net after a pass from senior Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Uncasville, Conn.) in the 60th minute. Sypek capped off her hat trick at the 79:06 mark when she scored an unassisted goal to propel JWU to the 4-0 victory.
Sophomore Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.J.) made one save in the shutout win for the Wildcats while Tracy Koukol had 13 stops in the setback for Mount Ida. JWU had a 37-2 advantage in shots for the game.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 2-3, 2-0 in the GNAC while Mount Ida falls to 1-3 and 0-2 in conference play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, September 17th when they host Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 1:00 p.m.
