The women's tennis team is off to its best start in school history, running their record to a perfect 8-0 after a 5-4 victory against Emerson in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Byrant University Courts on Friday afternoon.
Emerson jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action and had a 4-1 advantage after two of the singles matches were finished. Johnson & Wales then stormed back, taking the next three singles matches. Sophomore Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) notched one of the most impressive victories of the season at No. 1 singles for JWU, defeating Lacey Russell, one of the top players in the northeast region, by a score of 7-5, 6-5. A come from behind 5-7, 6-1, 10-2 win by junior Ansley Sego (Naperville, Ill.) at the fourth singles spot knotted the match at 4-4. The day came down to third singles where sophomore Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) propelled the Wildcats to a 5-4 win with a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
Piperis also picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles with sophomore Darcy Predieri (Sudbury, Ohio). Predieri also had a pair wins on the day, posting a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Johnson & Wales is now 8-0 for the season and 3-0 in the GNAC while Emerson falls to 5=3 on the year and 4-2 in league play. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, October 6th when they host Albertus Magnus for a GNAC contest at 12:00 p.m.
