Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision To Western New England
The women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision against Western New England in a non-conference contest on the road on Tuesday evening.
In the first set, Johnson & Wales held a 21-18 lead after a service ace by sophomore Alyssa Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine). Western New England then closed out the set with a 7-2 run for the 25-23 victory. The second set saw the two teams battle back and forth early with JWU trailing by only one when a service ace by sophomore Donna McCain (Corning, N.Y.) made the score 19-18. The host Golden Bears later used a 7-1 run to close out the set en route to the 25-20 victory and the 2-0 advantage.
The Wildcats responded in the third game, jumping out to the 17-11 lead, again capitalizing on a service ace, this time by senior captain Karlie Haack (Selkirk, N.Y.). The Wildcats then held on for the 25-20 victory to make the score 2-1. In the fourth and deciding game, WNEU took a 5-0 early advantage after a kill by Maureen Pollet. The Wildcats came back, however and cut the lead to 10-9 on a kill by Rey. The two teams then traded points with Western New England holding a 17-16 advantage. The Golden Bears closed the match on an 8-3 run for the 25-19 win in the set and the 3-1 match victory.
Johnson & Wales was led by Haack with 17 kills and three digs while Drapeau added a triple double with 11 kills, 12 set assists and 11 digs. Western New England was paced by Pollet with 13 kills and nine digs while Heather Mears added 38 set assists and 10 digs for the Golden Bears.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 1-7 while Western New England remains undefeated at 7-0. The Wildcats will return to action on September 14-15 when they travel to the New Paltz State Invitational.
